SPECIAL PROTECTION AREA FOR BIRDS – the Sandomierska Forest 

 

Within the limits of Local Action Group there are the regions of Natura 2000 with a total area of 6710,2 ha. It encompasses the north-western parts of communes: Kamień ( 3481,8 ha), Sokołów Małopolski ( 513,6 ha) i Głogów Małopolski ( 2714,8 ha). The area of the Sandomierska Forest provides an important sanctuary for many bird species. 43 bird species have been found here listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive. The Sandomierska Forest is a valuable area when considering the number of black stork, white stork, birds of prey and corncrake - over 1% of the population in Poland. In case of the roller, ferruginous duck and great white egret the forest is a place where over 10% of the species of populations in Poland build their nests. Thus, it is an important sanctuary where they can be saved. Moreover, the area is a place where in the breeding season one can find many bird species like the tawny pipit, nightjar, hoopoe, woodpecker (middle spotted, black, syrian, grey-faced and green) red-backed Shrike, woodlark, honey buzzard, barred warbler and ortolan. The tree stand of this region is characterized mainly by pine species with beech, alder, fir and birch admixture. The richness of mushrooms and berries can be ranked among the natural values of the forest. 

 

SPECIAL PROTECTION AREA FOR FISH (potential) - the Lower San and Wisłok. 

 

The region is situated in the area of the Trzebownisko and Czarna Communes with a total area of 195 ha. The area provides shelter for many fish species which prove to be valuable both from the natural and economic point of view. 31 fish species, including five protected, can be found in the waters of the Lower San and Wisłok. The brook lamprey, asp, amur bitterling, Mediterranean barbel, European bullhead and others live here.
